Pinguecula and Pterygium
Below are two examples of what a pinguecula (early stage) or pterygium (more severe) might look like. They are both benign changes to the conjunctiva (clear membrane on the eye) caused by UV light, dust and wind. Sunglasses protect your eyes from all of these irritants. These can be found at any age but are more common as we get older. This conjunctival sensitivity is often hereditary. It may be difficult for you to know if this is what you have and a thorough examination with a biomicroscope will allow us to ensure this lesion is nothing more serious.
The best way to prevent getting these conditions is to wear your sunglasses and a hat.
